biography.
EARLY LIFE : Nanako Kawara was born on June 3rd, 1998, in the beautiful city of Aomori, Japan. Her mother was an English teacher and her father was a professional translator, which lead to Nanako having a strong grasp on both Japanese and English for her entire life. She grew up with a love of all things music, especially singing and dancing. Kawara set her sights on a musical career from a very young age, and from the moment she was able, enrolled into her primary school's glee and dance clubs. Idol promoters kept a close eye on the young generation, so at just thirteen-years-old, Kawara was scouted by a the top idol agency in Aomori.Along with four other girls: Ayame Matsui, Harumi Ozaki, Mana Asai and Kazumi Toyoda — they formed the idol quintent known as JK☆Dream, where they performed mononymously under their first names. JK☆DREAM (2011 - 2014) : The group released their first single, To your heart on December 9th, 2011, which was met with high praise from fans and critics alike. This was followed by the release of their second single, Aomori Love on January 6th, 2012, which was then followed by their debut studio album of the same name on January 20th. Following the hot release of the album, they went on their first tour across Japan, selling out small venues in several cities, and nearly selling out a larger venue in Aomori.Immediately following the tour, JK☆Dream got straight to work on their second studio album, Forever☆Dream. During the production of the album, Ayame had a family emergency and requested to leave the group. The agency asked for the remaining members to re-record her sections of the songs they had worked on, and silently cut her involvement in the album out. The rest of the girls were upset by the choice, but didn't have much of a say in the matter. The album's first single, Shine! was released on November 23rd to more critical acclaim. Over the coming weeks, they released the singles Bring it on!, Daisuki ♡, and the title track Forever Dream, before the release of the album on January 18th, 2013.Immediately after the release of the album, Mana exited the group as well due to her discomfort with the complete erasure of Ayame from the group's image. JK☆Dream embarked on the Forever☆Dream international tour that they had been promoting as a trio. After crossing Japan again, they made their first visit to the United States as well as the United Kingdom. After the tour had ended, Kazumi would also exit the group, reducing JK☆Dream to just Nanako and Harumi.Following the tour, they began work on what would become their final studio album, Passion☆Girls. With less moving parts, the duo worked faster and released their first single for the album, heart♡restart on August 22nd. The singles dreamin' of you and love♡shock! released through September, before the release of the album on October 3rd. The music was received well by their remaining fan base, but JK☆Dream had lost a lot of its following with the string of departures from the group.
JK☆Dream's last hurrah would come when they embarked on a short, uninspired tour through a few big cities across the country, before their agency announced JK☆Dream's disbandment on December 1st, bringing an end to the group after three years. Both Nanako and Harumi were let go from their respective contracts following the disbandment. SOLO MUSIC CAREER (2017 - 2019) : After graduating from high school, Kawara put her name out there and applied to several different idol agencies across the country. She signed on to a large Tokyo-based agency, with which she had to relocate to the big city with assistance from the agency. The mystery and confusion of JK☆Dream's disbandment had resulted in a sizeable amount of hype growing around Nanako before she had even released her first piece of music. She performed under her full name as Nanako Kawara, and released her debut single Still lovin you ♡ on June 30th, 2017.Nanako's music took heavy inspiration from western music that she listened to, and her sound was more akin to western pop, EDM and hip hop music than anything popular in Japan. Though it was a risk, it helped Kawara stand out beyond her history as a member of JK☆Dream. Shortly after her first single was released, Kawara and her agency announced her debut studio album, POP☆STAR 75 to be released on September 8th.In anticipation of its release, Nanako released three more singles: It's my world, Call me baby and 実は、 — the final song of which opened up about the disbandment of JK☆Dream and the individual members' departures.POP☆STAR 75 was released on September 8th, and met with overwhelming critical acclaim from fans and reviewers alike. The release practically skyrocketed Kawara into mainstream success, and had become one of her agency's most popular acts in just shy of six months. Her hybrid style and use of English helped her to become popular both locally and overseas.Following the release of her first album, Nanako went on a nationwide tour, during which she would announce the upcoming release of POP☆STAR 75 DX — an extended version of her debut album with bonus tracks that promised to be highly experimental, giving a taste of what was to come for her future. The release of POP☆STAR 75 DX on November 10th performed exceptionally well, and would go on to surpass the original album's sales. The album featured seven new songs that were heavily inspired by the blossoming rage music scene in the west, and would spawn Kawara's biggest song yet as she collaborated with rapper and producer Rohan Belmont, a.k.a. umbra, for WATCH OUT, which would ultimately amass over 70 million streams on Spotify since its release. The week following, Kawara announced that she would be embarking on a tour of the United States and Canada early into the new year to celebrate the album's release, and a Japan tour to follow a few weeks after returning home. Both tours did exceptional, with several venues selling out stateside and all of them selling out locally. With the reception to her experimental music being very positive, Kawara fully leaned into the sound for her next project, and brought Belmont on as the executive producer of the album. She released her first single for the album, HEADLINES, on May 25th, which was met with overwhelmingly positive feedback. The following week, Kawara announced that the album of the same name would be released on August 31st.More singles were released every three weeks until the album's release, including ROCK YOUR WORLD, BE LIKE ME, and PLAYBACK — the last of which would go on to become her biggest commercial song to date, having over 100 million plays on Spotify. HEADLINES released on August 31st just as promised, followed by tours in Japan and North America, eventually expanding throughout the United Kingdom and Europe due to popular demand. While overseas, Kawara collaborated with a handful of popular hip hop and rage artists, featuring and collaborating on songs with the likes of Nicki Minaj, Megan Thee Stallion, UnoTheActivist, and others. Following her international tour, Kawara was stopped by airport security in Tokyo on November 27th, and taken into custody for being under the influence of marijuana edibles that she had snuck onto the plane from the United States. The news was quickly leaked to the public by dirt sheets, and countless Japanese fans turned their back on Kawara due to the country's strong anti-cannabis stance. Nanako was abruptly dropped by her agency on December 5th due to the scandal, despite having become their biggest and most successful act. A few weeks after the incident, Kawara broke her silence by announcing that she had hired a legal team and would be filing defamation lawsuits against the aforementioned dirt sheets over the release of private details from the incident, as well as a wrongful termination lawsuit against her former agency.Kawara was never prosecuted over the incident due to the specific laws against the possession of marijuana. Kawara and her legal team both would receive undisclosed but purportedly very healthy sums of money from many of the dirt sheets as well as her previous agency, after the cases' respective settlements. Though due to the circumstances, Kawara was not immediately sought after by other agencies, which would bring an end to her musical career after the Spring of 2019.Kawara remained in the public eye through social media, eventually creating a YouTube channel to discuss her time in the idol industry and share stories about her experiences in Japan and the west alike. She discussed having worked on new music produced by Belmont, as well as with a handful of other Japanese artists who had been influenced by Nanako — but said music has never officially been released. WORLD WONDER RING STARDOM (2020 - PRESENT) : On August 21st, 2020, it was announced that "former megastar idol", Nanako Kawara, had begun training at the World Wonder Ring Stardom dojo for a career in professional wrestling. Kawara had previously discussed getting into wrestling during her time in the west, and decided to give it a try as a new means to showcase her loud personality. Kawara was set to make her in-ring debut at the Yokohama Cinderella event. She had her debut match in singles action against Hanan on October 3rd, where she emerged victorious. The following night, she faced off with Tam Nakano at Nagoya Rainbow Fight, where the two women wrestled to a time limit draw. Nakano invited her to compete alongside her in the upcoming Goddesses of Stardom Tag League, which would be Kawara's first real test as a pro-wrestler. Her inexperience would show as the duo only scored 4 points across their 5 matches, with a record of 2 wins and 3 losses. After an unsuccessful Tag League, the two women were joined by a debuting Unagi Sayaka. As a trio, they found overwhelming success together and separated from the STARS faction to form Cosmic Angels. In just over a month, they went on to win the Artist of Stardom Championship, marking Kawara's first championship reign in pro-wrestling. They would go on to become the longest reigning and joint-most defending champions during their near-300-day long tenure.During the reign, Kawara competed and made the finals of a tournament for the vacant Future of Stardom Championship, where she defeated her friend and teammate, Unagi Sayaka in the final on July 4th, 2021 to crown herself a double champion in just her first nine months of wrestling. She entered that year's 5★STAR Grand Prix in the Red Stars block. Kawara did better than most people would have anticipated in the tournament, though she still only scored 6 points, with a record of 3 wins and 6 losses across her 9 matches. Not long after the tournament, she would go on to lose the Artist of Stardom Championship with her team on October 3rd to MaiHimePoi, before subsequently losing the Future of Stardom Championship to Ruaka on October 9th.She entered the Goddesses of Stardom Tag League alongside Tam Nakano for the second year in a row, where they would fail to escape the block stage with a poor performance of only 3 points, creating tension between the two. They attempted to resolve their issues in a match for Tam's Wonder of Stardom Championship on November 27th, as Kawara was insistent on proving that she was not the weak link of the trio, but ultimately came up short against Nakano. For the rest of 2021 and the first half of 2022, Kawara attempted to rebuild her reputation, as many wrestling fans had soured on the former musician and viewed her as entitled without the ability to back it up. She drastically improved her in-ring ability over the following months, and saw a return to the confidence that she had during her musical career.Following this, Kawara would pick up her best tournament record yet, as she entered the largest 5★STAR Grand Prix in history and competed in the Blue Stars block, where she scored 10 points across her 12 matches, failing to advance from the group stage. Despite her performance, Tam Nakano passed up on her as a partner for the upcoming Goddesses of Stardom Tag League and went on to team with Natsupoi, ultimately excluding Nanako from the tournament. On the final night of the tournament, Kawara announced her departure from Cosmic Angels, as she was fed up with Nakano and was going to "be her own star" from then on. Nanako would go on to found a new group, as she entered the inaugural Triangle Derby at the beginning of 2023 with two mystery competitors: revealed to be her long-time friend and former JK☆Dream partner, Harumi Ozaki, as well as the Singaporean-born model-turned-wrestler, Izumi Ayano. Both women making their respective Stardom debuts. The trio failed to escape the block, but proved their success and chemistry with a positive win/loss record. They continued to team up as a trio for the following months, and the group would be christened by Kawara as "The Industry". Though they wouldn't gain any permanent members for months, a handful of different foreign talent were brought into the group to team alongside them for touring shows. With the success building for Kawara and her teammates, she laid out a challenge to the reigning Wonder of Stardom Champion, Shiori Saikou, for a title match on April 23rd at All-Star Grand Queendom. Against all the odds, Kawara went on to end the champion's historic reign, winning her first championship in nearly two years.Nanako would go on to make two successful defences of the championship, first against Natsupoi and then against her stablemate, Izumi Ayano, during which she also teamed up with Harumi Ozaki for the first time in a wrestling ring, competing under the team name Passion☆Girls — in reference to the album they produced as the two remaining members of JK☆Dream. The pairing challenged Mayu Iwatani & Sakura Sanada for the Goddesses of Stardom Championship, with the match taking place on June 25th. Kawara and Ozaki were victorious, being crowned as the new champions.During their reign, Nanako's Wonder of Stardom Championship run would come to an end when she was usurped by that year's Cinderella Tournament winner, MIRAI on July 2nd. Ending her reign with the gold at 70 days. Though she still reigned with Harumi, during which they entered the 2023 5★STAR Grand Prix as champions, but would only hold the titles for over a month before losing to the team of Natsupoi and Saori Anou on August 13th, in the middle of the tournament.Despite the setback, Nanako went on to achieve the best win/loss record in the tournament yet, but ultimately still failed to escape from the block after a loss to Alex Blackwell on the final night. Following the tournament, she teamed up with Ozaki once again to enter the Goddesses of Stardom Tag League, where they competed in the Red Goddesses Block. Kawara would once again have her best performance to date, as Passion☆Girls picked up 7 points, but still didn't advance from the block stage.Izumi Ayano teamed with one of that year's promising rookies from the STARDOM Dojo, Kin Ishibashi. Her style impressed the three members of The Industry, and she was invited to be their fourth official member — finally growing the group after close to a year.Following a middling remainder of 2023, Nanako was determined to make the new year belong to herself and The Industry. It kicked off with the 2024 Triangle Derby — marking the one year anniversary of her unit. The trio of Nanako Kawara, Harumi Ozaki, and Izumi Ayano entered the tournament for a second year in a row, but would face elimination in the opening round after going to a fifteen minute time limit draw against Queen's Quest. On the same night, Kin Ishibashi was defeated in the first round of the Rookie of Stardom tournament by newcomer Kaho Matsube, who would then be defeated by Yuzuki in the finals. Despite her loss, Kawara saw something in Matsube's fire, and comforted her after her loss as well as inviting her into The Industry as both her student and bodyguard.Nanako and Kaho teamed up for the first time at 13th Anniversary Supreme Fight, competing in a losing effort against her old rival, Tam Nakano and Yuna Mizumori. On a touring show after the event, Kawara teamed up with Harumi Ozaki and Kaho Matsube in a winning effort over STARS' Hanan, Hazuki, and Mayu Iwatani. Nanako used the win over Iwatani as leverage to challenge her for the IWGP Women's Championship, which would mark her first time wrestling outside of STARDOM as she competed for New Japan Pro-Wrestling on The New Beginning in Sapporo. Her challenge for the title was unsuccessful, however. In March, The Industry set their sights on winning more gold, as Kawara planned on becoming a two-time Artist of Stardom Champion. She teamed up with Harumi Ozaki and Izumi Ayano to defeat Gold Standard for the titles. Shortly after, the entire group would enter a rivalry with the Oedo Tai faction, which saw Kawara slated to face Natsuko Tora at All-Star Grand Queendom.Just days before, Kawara made her official debut for All Elite Wrestling on April 24th, where she defeated Anna Jay in singles competition. With Forbidden Door on the horizon, she called her shot for the AEW Women's World Championship held by "Timeless" Toni Storm, though she didn't receive an immediate answer from the champion.Back in Japan, Nanako would pick up the victory over Natsuko Tora following a botched interference from Noa Kurone. Following the match, Oedo Tai attempted to assault Kawara, until The Industry would make the save. Oedo Tai then turned their attention to beating down on Kurone, but Kawara encouraged her teammates to rush back to the ring and save Noa from the assault. Though she was hesitant to accept Kawara's invitation, Noa would allign herself with The Industry after being kicked out from her former group. In the weeks that followed, Nanako would divide her time between STARDOM and AEW, where she attempted to get underneath the skin of the AEW Women's World Champion by getting rather close to her "understudy", Mariah May. They devloped an almost intimate relationship, which was enough to draw the champion's ire, and during Stardom's June 2nd event, "Timeless" Toni Storm along with Mariah May appeared in a vignette where Storm finally accepted her challenge for a match at Forbidden Door.Kawara and Storm signed the contract for their match two weeks out from the event, and competed on the same side of a trios match just days before alongside Mariah May, where they were able to co-exist just enough to score victory over Anna Jay and The Outcasts. Following the match, Nanako redirected an attack from Storm to hit Mariah May, creating dissension between the two just days ahead of their match. On June 30th at AEW X NJPW: Forbidden Door, Kawara would shock the world and use the distrust between Storm and May to defeat the champion in the center of the ring, becoming the brand new AEW Women's World Champion.
In the weeks that followed, Kawara split her attention between leading The Industry in STARDOM, and representing the women's division in AEW. Herself and her teammates would lose the Artist of Stardom Championship on August 4th, as they were defeated by Cosmic Angels. In the United States, Kawara supported Mariah May for her journey through the Women's Owen Hart Cup Tournament, which she would eventually go on to win.Just one day before All In: London, Kawara added a second championship to her collection as she defeated Dani Luna for the RevPro Undisputed British Women's Championship at RevPro's 12th Anniversay Event. At All In: London, despite Mariah having promised a clean and friendly match, the challenger would fight a little dirty and use underhanded tactics to defeat Kawara — ending her championship reign after just 56 days. Though Nanako didn't hold any harsh feelings toward Mariah. She returned to the United States for a few appearances after All In: London, where she defeated a local competitor on that week's AEW Rampage taping, before she teamed alongside her student and bodyguard, Kaho Matsube, at NJPW Capital Collision.Nanako returned to Japan for a few months, but would make her return to AEW in October to wrestle Harley Cameron on the November 16th edition of Collision. She got close to Mariah May once again, reuniting their friendship as Kawara teamed alongside her, as well as seconded her for her title defences leading into the Full Gear pay-per-view event. On that night, Nanako would turn her back on May and announce that she had set her sights on becoming a two-time AEW Women's World Champion.Their championship match took place at AEW Winter Is Coming on December 11th, where Mariah successfully defended against her. The two made up and shared an embrace after the match. Following the match, Nanako's work became split between Japan and the United Kingdom, as she continued to defend her RevPro Undisputed British Women's Championship leading into the upcoming Wrestle Dynasty event on January 5th, 2025. She was slated to challenge the AEW TBS Champion, Mercedes Moné, in a title vs. title match, where Moné emerged victorious and ended Kawara's title reign after 134 days.Following her title loss, Kawara led The Industry into STARDOM's New Year Unit Competition, where they emerged victorious in the B Block. They competed against NEO GENESIS in the finals, though they would come up short against STARDOM's newest collective. In March of the new year, Nanako Kawara revealed that she was choosing not to exclusive resign with STARDOM when her contract expired the following month in April. She was instead moving overseas, and was planning to sign with All Elite Wrestling. She promised to not abandon The Industry, but hand the primary reins of the unit to Harumi Ozaki, and only make occasional appearances for the promotion going forward. She wrestled her final singles match in STARDOM against Ozaki on April 2nd in Korakuen Hall, where Ozaki defeated her former partner in a passing of the torch.Kawara officially left the promotion after the match, but would compete on the double header of STARDOM shows in Las Vegas over WrestleMania weekend, teaming alongside Kaho Matsube and Sofia Florencia on each night respectively.Nanako made her official return to AEW at Beach Break Night 1, where she competed in a four-way Eliminator Match for the AEW Women's World Championship. Emerging victorious in the match, Kawara made an emphatic debut by earning herself a championship match against "Timeless" Toni Storm. The match took place at Double or Nothing on May 25th, where Storm retained against Kawara, avenging her loss at Forbidden Door the year prior.Following her loss, Kawara showed respect for Storm and developed a close friendship with her. She set her sights on avenging a loss of her own, as she challenged Mercedes Moné for the AEW TBS Championship. The match took place on the 300th episode of AEW Dynamite on July 2nd, in which Kawara failed to defeat the champion.Nanako was abruptly inserted into a four-way match to determine an interim ROH Women's World Television Champion at ROH Supercard of Honor on July 11th, following an injury to the reigning champion, Red Velvet. Kawara picked up the victory in the match, earning herself another championship on her resume. The following night, she competed at All In: Texas in the Women's Casino Gauntlet Match, where she was ultimately pinned by Athena to finish the match.Following an injury to her wrist, Kawara announced her return to action by challenging Athena for the ROH Women's World Championship at Death Before Dishonor.
